Early Years

Early Years education covers:

  • Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS): 3-7 year olds; Nursery (Pre-school) - Reception

The EYFS uses a play-based approach to learning and focuses on having a curriculum that gives each young person the best start to their education through a carefully planned environment.

  • personal, social and emotional development
  • physical development
  • literacy
  • mathematics
  • understanding the world
  • expressive arts and design

Primary

Primary education covers:

  • Key stage 1: 5-7 year olds; school years 1-2
  • Key stage 2: 7-11 year olds; school years 3-6

You will need to feel confident about teaching a wide range of national curriculum subjects, which include:

Core subjects: English, maths and Science.

Foundation subjects: Art and Design, Computing, Design and Technology, MFL, Geography, History, Music and Physical Education.

In addition, primary schools must teach Religious Education and Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE).  Primary ITT courses increasingly offer a specialism in a growing range of subjects, with incentives for some, such as maths.

Secondary

Secondary education covers:

  • Key Stage 3: 11-14 year olds; school years 7-9
  •  Key Stage 4: 14-16 year olds; school years 10-11
  • Key Stage 5: 16-19 year olds; school years 12-13 (Post 16)

ITT in secondary teaching entails a specialist subject.

Core subjects: English, maths and Science.

Foundation subjects: Art and Design, Business Studies, Computing, Design and Technology, Drama, MFL, Geography, History, Music, Physical Education, Psychology, Religious Education and Sociology.

In addition, secondary schools must teach; sex and relationship guidance and PSHE.
